Southern Cornbread in a cast iron skillet with butter and honey

History of Cooking Cornbread in a Cast Iron Skillet

Cornbread baked in a cast iron skillet has its roots deeply embedded in Southern cuisine. Dating back to Native American and early American settlers, the skillet method allowed for even heat distribution, resulting in a crisp, golden crust. This rustic tradition has been passed down through generations, preserving the unique flavor and texture that make Southern cornbread a timeless favorite.

In Louisiana, Cornbread is often paired with milk and is known as Coush Coush.

Ingredients in Southern Cornbread

  1. All-Purpose Flour
  2. Cornmeal (Our favorite is Great River Organic Medium Grind Cornmeal)
  3. Sugar
  4. Buttermilk (or Buttermilk Substitute)
  5. Egg
  6. Baking Power
  7. Baking Soda
  8. Butter
  9. Salt

How to Make Southern Cornbread

First, preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Next, mix your dry ingredients in a medium-sized bowl.

After, beat the egg in a small bowl. Pour your milk and beaten egg into your dry ingredients and mix well.

Spray an 8×8 baking dish or a cast iron skillet. Finally, pour the batter into the pan or cast iron skillet and bake for 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

How to Make a Buttermilk Substitute

If you don’t have Buttermilk on hand, there are several substitutes you can make at home:

Milk + Lemon Juice: Mix 1 cup of milk with 1 tablespoon of lemon juice.

Milk + Vinegar: Mix 1 cup of milk with 1 tablespoon of distilled white vinegar.

Louisiana Dishes to Pair with Cornbread

We love pairing this traditional side dish with our Red Beans and Rice, Cajun Chicken and Sausage Gumbo, and New Orleans Jambalaya. Be sure to try one (or all) of these recipes for the full Southern experience.
